“Where there is power, there is resistance”
Michael Foucault
September 26th, 2014, 43 students from Escuela Rural Normal de Ayotzinapa disappeared out of the bloom in the city of Iguala, Guerrero. Eight years had passed and no one knows where they went or who took them with certainty, until now.
This tragic occurrence has become one of the most scandalous mediatic events in the history of Mexico and is commonly known as the «Case of the Ayotzinapa´s 43». After 8 years, president Andrés Manuel López Obrador delivered a new investigation into the case, and the recent results are terrible. The latest report tagged this case as a State Crime, yet again, this fact does not represent a shocking reveal for 2 reasons: the first is thanks to the countless protests that made clear who the true responsible was, the State, which never truly bothered to give real answers to the families of the 43 students that suffered endless pain for their missing children, to this matter the government published their own version of the story, that was called “the historic truth”. This official version is something that will be addressed later; the second reason is the simplest: It takes a brief search on the violent history of Mexico to know how corruption and tyranny of men in power destroy and kills everything that represents an obstacle to their ambitions. In this sense, the real truth of this case was something that was always suspected and told, the only thing missing was realizing who committed this State crime against the students. What did the “official version” of 2014 say? Let us address this matter.
The called “historic truth” was the version of Jesus Murillo Karam who was the General Justice attorney at the time, Tomas Zeron who was head of the criminal investigation agency, and Enrique Peña Nieto who was the president of Mexico at the time, just to give Mexican people an answer of what happened with these students that disappeared. This official version pointed out that the 43 students were delivered to the criminal group Guerreros Unidos that night, after that, the report says that Guerreros Unidos mistook the identity of the students with members of a rival group called «Los Rojos», that confusion resulted on the murder of the 43 students. Their bodies were burned afterward on the municipal Cocula´s dump. The investigations of the reports were led by Jesus Murillo Karam and Tomás Zeron.
The “historic truth” concluded that the purpose of the students was to sabotage an event of Maria de Los Angeles Pineda Villa, wife of Jose Luis Abarca Velázquez who was the mayor at the time. Pineda and her husband are now in jail because they were called guilty on the charges of kidnapping and collaborating with criminal groups. As we know now, this version is fake, and the latest report of the Ayotzinapa event led by the commission created to address this case proves it.
What does the latest information say?
The report presented this august, confirmed that this crime involved criminal groups and agents of diverse Mexican institutions of the State.
This report establishes that the historic truth is just a version that hides the true events and alters the crime scenes, it also indicated the omission and secrecy ties between agents of the State and criminal groups.
The report concludes that the missing 43 students are indeed part of a State crime, due to some of the key aspects:
- Federal and State authorities of the highest ranks were negligent, due to elements of presumption of altering facts and circumstances in order to create a different conclusion from the true events that happened.
- The authorities and state agents knew all the time about the whereabouts of the students, from the school they attended to their disappearance, to the actions and omissions that led to the kidnapping and execution of the 43 students.
- Armed Forces continuously spied on the students at the time of the events and this information was never revealed or shared with the correspondent authorities at the moment.
- To create the “Historic truth” multiple state agents, authorities, and even the armed forces colluded to torture, modify pieces of evidence, falsification of documents, and falsification of intel, and possible construction of fake scene crimes.
In conclusion, when State corruption threats safety and integrity of Mexican citizens and people are fully aware of this, the truth of several events that compromises human rights are often covered in a dark veil of lies and secrets to avoid adjudging responsibility to the perpetrators of this type of crimes, this represents a serious social and political issue that must be addressed by an adequate justice system in order to unveil the hidden truths and reach proper justice, this case is one of many more that are still unresolved in the history of violence in Mexico.
