A threatening stance

Today's real borders are not between nations, but between powerful and powerless, free and fettered, privileged and humiliated.

The conflict between Russia and Ukraine has recently left us with a weird uncertainty about what would happen in our close future. Who would have thought that just after the COVID pandemic we will face the possibility of a World War III?  The conflict is still making too much noise, and leaving behind a serious number of political, social and economic consequences?

This war has confronted Russia with almost the rest of the world, and many sanctions had been imposed over Russia as a consequence of their military actions (economical restrictions, limited internet access, and most importantly the one imposed by the USA on March 8th of the present year, which forbids oil and gas importations from Russia), all those were a hard punch to the Euro-Asiatic giant.

The United States of America has established severe sanctions over Russia and has called Putin as an enemy of the world and a threat to all members of the NATO alliance. The United States of America’s interference in this conflict is not a surprise, but it is controversial because they have a long list of invasions over other countries.

Since 1798 the United States of America had invaded many countries, and the reasons behind those invasions are numerous. I will point out some of these world events in which the USA took part.

  • The armed conflict in Somalia, the United States deployed 300 soldiers to fight against terrorist threats represented by the Islamic State and the radical group Al Shabab.
  • Yemen 2000, The United States fought against the AQAP (Al Qaeda of the Arabic Peninsula) it did not become a brutal conflict like others but was relevant considering that the military presence remains to this day.
  • Afghanistan, the United States deployed 13.329 soldiers to Afghanistan to fought against the Taliban and al Qaeda after the tragic events of 9/11, a day that will be remembered forever in the history of mankind. The President Bush made clear his intentions, he was not going to remain as a witness of a brutal attack against innocent civilians in his country and not do anything, he initiated a war that lasted years, leaving behind more than 2.300 dead soldiers, 2.2 billion dollars wasted, and a serious record of war crimes perpetrated by the USA Marines.
  • The United States also initiated military activities against Saddam Hussein’s Regime in Iraq violating international laws relate with the use of the force (Art. 2, 4 United Nations letter).
  • In 2017 the United States bombed Syria to fight against the Islamic State, this relatively recent event left thousands of deaths.

These are just a few instances where the United States used armed forces to invade other countries. It is impossible to know for sure the total numbers of deaths caused by violence originated from wars where the United States of America has intervened.

The worst part is that we do not know if this conflict will increase, and even now in 2022, we are just sitting and watching how these super-powers are threatening global peace.
